Tuesday 7th December
A great morning had at the local butterfly farm….not that any of us saw any butterflies at all. The heavens opened just as we loaded the kids into the matatus, but great fun was still had. As I’ve said before, I have never seen kids have so much fun and enjoyment in the rain. Interestingly the only volunteers that didn’t mind the rain and got stuck in straight away with the kids (and were immediately drenched) was me and Michele….mmmm…combined age of nearly 100 but clearly the ones with the greatest sense of fun!! Never too old to get on a see-saw or swing.
Wednesday 8th December
Sports day – never say the Kenyan’s are not competitive…..blimey nearly had riots over who came first, second etc in each race – and the teachers were the worst! Brilliant fun….yard a bit limiting for the races and we tried not to damage too many plants, but the kids (and staff) yelled and hollered for two hours non-stop….a day to remember.
Enjoy the photos/video clips!
Last day of the school year tomorrow so will be saying goodbye to standard 4 as know I am not teaching them next year. I've been asked to oversee the whole of the English programme (that is still being finished!) in all standards which will be brilliant and also give some ongoing support to all the new volunteers that will arrive in January. I'm going to be teaching standard 6 (yes first time Precious has had a standard 6....not sure whether the new classrooms will be finished though) so going to spend my Christmas break making sure my grammar is up to scratch! (Inbetween diving and safari-ing [is that a proper word I wonder....mmmm, good start to teaching English) with Jono when he gets here.
This week has also been very satisfying as we have been able to buy absolutely loads of text books for next year (using the money raised by FCA) and I can’t wait to see the kids faces when they see that they will have a textbook each (or to share in the lower standards). Hopefully it will mean more interaction between the children/teacher as we won’t have to write everything up on the board all the time….which will get rid of one of my pet hates……chalk breaking all the time!
Amazing how 2010 started and now is ending for me..... a life changing year, and I can honestly say I have absolutely no regrets about anything this year....but do chuckle that I've gone from making decisions on £23million rebuild of school, and all the other pressures that went with running FCA, to worrying about how many bits of chalk I break in a day!
What fun you all had. Not sure Woodside can possibly compete!
